Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling receives 'AMM' Scrap Company of the Year award

This is the second consecutive year the company has earned the honor.

Scrap metal processing company Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling, based in Owego, New York, has been recognized as the Scrap Company of the Year by American Metal Market (AMM).

AMM presented Upstate Shredding this top industry award during the annual AMM awards dinner at The Edison Ballroom in New York City in June. The award for Scrap Company of the Year represents the largest honor in scrap and recycling to be given to a firm in North America, says Upstate.

Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling was nominated from a pool of thousands of scrap metal recycling companies and was chosen as one of two finalists along with Jefferson Iron and Metal Brokerage. Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling also was named the 2015 Scrap Company of the Year at the AMM awards ceremony in June 2015.

Adam Weitsman, CEO of Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling, says, “2015 and 2016 were two of the most trying years historically for the scrap metal recycling industry. I was shocked when we won the award last year, but to win it again, in consecutive years, is equally as shocking.”

He continues, “This is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our employees throughout New York and Pennsylvania. It wouldn’t be possible without each and every one of our team members working hard day in and day out. This is the highlight of my professional career and I am honored to have been selected from the extremely deserving scrap metal recycling companies throughout North America.  Thank you to American Metal Market and the esteemed judges for their recognition of my team’s tireless dedication to great customer service and commitment to excellence in the industry.”

For the past seven years, AMM has recognized innovation and excellence in steel and related industries with its Awards for Steel Excellence. Firms that are finalists and winners demonstrate best practices to achieve outstanding results in their field. Winners are selected by a panel of judges with extensive steel industry leadership experience. Judges evaluate the candidates using a point-based qualitative approach to determine the winners in each category. Nomination and judging processes are audited by and in full compliance with Euromoney Institutional Investor Plc guidelines and standards to ensure integrity and objectivity.

In May, Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling was named the top scrap recycling firm in the world for 2016 by Platts at an international awards ceremony in London.

Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling is the East Coast’s largest privately held scrap metal processor. The company has a number of locations in northeastern United States, including two facilities in both Owego and Ithaca, as well as locations in Binghamton, Brant, Jamestown, Hornell, Rochester, Syracuse, Watertown, Albany and Allegany, New York; and in Scranton and New Castle, Pennsylvania.

The company says it will process more than 1 million tons of ferrous and 300 million pounds of nonferrous scrap metal in 2016.
