Companies partner on chemical recycling technology

Biofabrik and Eagle Technology introduce Wastx Plastic, a modular containerized plastic recycling system that uses pyrolysis.

Norway-based Eagle Technology, a provider of what it says are environmentally friendly and sustainable technology systems and solutions, and Biofabrik, a German company that says it develops scalable solutions to critical environmental problems, have developed Wastx Plastic, a modular containerized plastic recycling system.

The two companies started talking in 2021 when Eagle Technology recognized the need to transition to more sustainable sectors in line with its vision of a "Clean Future." This shared commitment to plastic recycling laid the foundation for the collaboration in Norway, leading to the development of Wastx technology.

"At the heart of our strategy lies the art of partnership and a 'divide and conquer' philosophy, where each party is allowed to excel and focus on what they do best," Biofabrik CEO Oliver Riedel says.

"As the basis for developing Wastx technology, we have used insights from our operational ITDU [Induction Thermal Desorption Unit] technology in Norway, which converts drill cuttings into recycled oil,” Eagle Technology CEO Roy Moberg says. “The concept of a modular containerized plastic recycling system stems from our German partner, Biofabrik, and this was the ultimate starting point for the Wastx solution we now proudly present to you,"

The partners say they had a successful factory acceptance test (FAT) of the Wastx Plastic technology, conducting actual feedstock runs and producing market-ready oil.

This generation of the Wastx Plastic plant features technical improvements and is designed for global scalability, the partners say.

"Biofabrik's approach extends beyond individual projects, as we rather concentrate on scaling existing technologies from five to 500 units. We recognize the need for a driving force that pushes the boundaries toward transformative change, and that driving force is us," Riedel says.

Biofabrik also provides an offtake agreement, which it says streamlines the product's sale on the market and offers customers a comprehensive business model.

"Together with Biofabrik, we hosted our first joint demo week together, and it could not have gone better," Moberg says.

The partners have scheduled a release event in Bosnia-Herzegovina Oct. 24 where they will unveil a fully automated, decentralized and modular pyrolysis unit capable of processing up to 5 tons of plastic waste per day into high-quality pyrolysis oil and energy-rich gas.

"We can't wait to showcase our innovative strides in chemical recycling to the world, making a positive impact on the environment while revolutionizing the industry," Riedel says.
