Arrow to Expand e-Stewards Certification
Arrow Electronics Inc., Englewood, Colo., and the Basel Action Network (BAN), Seattle, have announced a three-year agreement to certify all of Arrow’s electronics recycling and IT asset recovery operations worldwide to the e-Stewards® standard. Arrow will be the first global e-Stewards recycler to take the program to all of its facilities on multiple continents, according to BAN.
“Arrow’s value recovery business is committed to maintaining the highest standards of environmental and social responsibility while contributing to the best practices of the industry on a global basis,” says Scott Venhaus, Arrow director of quality and compliance.
The certification covers nine Arrow Electronics processing facilities in the United States, six in Europe and one in Brazil.
Venhaus says, “Working with e-Stewards at our new Brazil facility is an exciting opportunity to jointly pilot the geographic expansion of e-Stewards into Latin America.”
Arrow’s value recovery business provides specialized management of reverse material streams, IT asset recovery and remarketing services.
E-Stewards is a globally accredited, third-party audited certification program developed by BAN. The e-Stewards standard is designed to assure customers of electronics recycling companies that no hazardous electronic waste will be exported to developing countries, end up in municipal landfills or incinerators or be processed using prison, child or forced labor, according to BAN. It also provides for the protection of confidential data housed in electronic equipment.
“We are very proud to partner with such a quality industry player as Arrow and are thrilled to accept its offer to pilot our program not only over North America but in Europe, Latin America and beyond,” says Jim Puckett, executive director of BAN.

LifeSpan Introduces Services for Enterprise Tablet Disposition
Newton, Mass.-based LifeSpan, a provider of IT asset disposition (ITAD) solutions, says it has introduced specialized services designed to ensure the secure and compliant disposal of tablet devices.
According to Gartner Research, tablet shipments will grow almost 68 percent this year, while PC and laptop shipment will decline more than 10 percent. In light of this trend, LifeSpan says it has implemented new technology and procedures to meet its clients’ needs for secure, compliant asset disposition.
“Data security for disposition has historically focused on PCs, laptops and servers,” Dag Adamson, LifeSpan president, says. “LifeSpan recognizes that tablets and other mobile devices are a significant and growing asset category for enterprises. The complexity of data erasure has increased with these new devices and the SSD (solid state drives) that they utilize. We’ve invested in new technology, training and processes in order to ensure auditable, secure data erasure for our clients,” Adamson adds.
LifeSpan’s tablet and mobile device service covers iOS (Apple), Android and Windows 8 devices.
Founded in 2002, LifeSpan is a managed services company that provides end-of-life data security, information technology and electronic asset retirement and asset remarketing services to enterprises, leasing companies, government and nonprofit organizations throughout the United States.
