NAID Board Approves New Auditor Qualifications
The board of directors of the Phoenix-based National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) has approved the creation of a new category of auditor specifically for conducting electronic media destruction audits.

Effective April 1, 2012, NAID auditors inspecting and evaluating electronic media sanitization operations are required to have the certified information systems security professional (CISSP) and certified information systems auditor (CISA) accreditations. The International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium issues the CISSP accreditation and the ISACA (previously known as Information Systems Audit and Control Association) issues the CISA.

NAID Certification Chair Angie Singer Keating says, “As NAID continues to grow its electronic information destruction certification, it is important that we align the accreditations and qualifications of the auditors.”

Historically, NAID has required its certification auditors to be certified protection professionals (CPP), which is the highest general security accreditation issued by ASIS International.

“Auditors with accreditations that emphasize physical security are critical when evaluating hard copy destruction,” says NAID CEO Bob Johnson. “While there are certainly physical security elements to the electronic information destruction process, we felt that individuals holding both accreditations would have the necessary security sensitivity while also understanding the IT-related issues.”

Johnson says NAID also would seek professionals within these disciplines to sit on the association’s certification rules and review boards.

“The recognition and use of these accreditations will also expand awareness of the NAID certification program within the ranks of these accrediting organizations,” he says. “This will undoubtedly add to the ever-growing acceptance of the program around the world.”

More information on NAID’ certification is available by contacting certification@naidonline.org.

NAID is a nonprofit trade association of the secure destruction industry, currently representing more than 1,800 member locations globally.
