DS Smith, a packaging, paper and recycling company with headquarters in London, has announced that it has produced a 100 percent recyclable cooler, using its proprietary Greencoat corrugated material that’s moisture-resistant and food-contact safe. Greencoat is a wax-free, 100 percent recyclable coated packaging solution.

According to a news release from DS Smith, the new cooler design is an alternative to the traditional polystyrene coolers. The company states that its Greencoat material is biodegradable, made of sustainable and renewable paper fiber. The new Greencoat coolers offer fully customizable printing for branding.

“Polystyrene is often swept into rivers and oceans and is one of the top items found in beach cleanups,” says Melanie Galloway, vice president of sales, marketing and innovation for packaging at DS Smith North America. “Foam packaging materials break down into small indigestible pellets, which are mistaken for food by animals. That’s why many more local and state governments are prohibiting their use.”

She says DS Smith’s Greencoat cooler serves as a sustainable cooler option, adding that the cooler is “fully recyclable, leak-proof, and helps the planet, people and animals.”
