NAID Announces Member of the Year, President’s Award Recipients
At the National Association of Information Destruction (NAID) 2013 Annual Conference in Nashville, Tenn., in March, NAID CEO Bob Johnson announced that Toni Tanti was the 2012 Member of the Year and that Gary Noland received the President’s Award.

Tanti owns The Secure Document Destruction Co., Lidcombe, Australia, and has served as the chair of the NAID-ANZ regional chapter for the past two years. During Tanti’s term, NAID-ANZ member locations doubled to 58.

Noland of American Mobile Shredding, Sacramento, Calif., was acknowledged at the behest of Scott Fasken, NAID past president, for his history of dedicated service to the industry and association. He has chaired the NAID Complaint Resolution Council (CRC) for five years.

NAID Campaign Seeks to Redefine Data Destruction
The National Association for Information Destruction (NAID), Phoenix, has launched a campaign designed to redefine how people think about data destruction.

“The general public now equates ‘shredding’ and ‘wiping’ with data destruction,” says NAID CEO Bob Johnson. “In reality, those words oversimplify the issue and our industry, and data security in general has suffered as a result.”

He adds, “Proper data destruction involves training, auditing, identifying vendor selection criteria and developing policies and procedures.”

NAID says that because the association has become so closely linked to proper data destruction, the campaign will take that connection further by using its acronym as a verb that represents proper data destruction.

“Ultimately, people will not shred or wipe their discarded records and IT assets,” Johnson says. “They will ‘NAID’ them, meaning they have outsourced the destruction process to a properly qualified service provider.”

While the campaign will use print, online and social advertising and marketing to achieve its goals, the association says the centerpiece of the campaign will be the NAID ’em website. The site, among other things, features serialized videos, or webisodes, to offer real-world examples and humorous stories of “NAIDing” information.

According to NAID’s leadership, the campaign will require a lot of time and dedication to change industry terminology and consumers’ vocabulary.

“I see this as an endless process,” Johnson says.

The National Association for Information Destruction is the nonprofit trade association for the secure destruction industry.

Access Expands with Two Acquisitions

Rob Alston, CEO of Livermore, Calif.-based Access, has announced the company’s acquisition of the records management business of Worth Systems Inc., Boston. Access says it is relocating Worth Systems’ records inventories to Access’ existing facilities within Boston.

“This addition of over a million files under management complements our overall expansion program for New England very nicely,” says Access President John Chendo. “We look forward to providing our newest clients from Worth Systems the highest levels of service for which we have become well-known in the Boston area.”

The Worth Systems acquisition follows the acquisition of the records management assets of Heritage Moving Systems, Aston, Pa. Access relocated the company’s inventory to Access’ Philadelphia facilities.

NAID Announces 2013 Board Election Results
Members of the National Association for Information Destruction (NAID), Phoenix, have elected individuals to four positions for the 2013 NAID board of directors.

Chris Isabell of i-Secure, Grants Pass, Ore., has been elected as president, with his term to begin at the NAID 2014 Annual Conference; Steve Richards, CSDS, of Richards & Richards, Nashville, Tenn., has been elected as treasurer; John Anderson of Shred 360, Irmo, S.C., has been elected as a director; and Michael Massaro of Iron Mountain, Charlotte, N.C., has been elected as a director.

This was the first year NAID conducted an electronic vote, which the organization says was designed to provide a more convenient and easy balloting process. In the past, hard-copy ballots were distributed, collected and counted at the annual NAID conference every year. This year, company representatives were given two weeks to submit their votes. According to NAID, this allowed for greater participation compared with previous years.

In addition to the candidates elected during the general election, directors also were selected by NAID’s regional chapters to fill regional directors positions. Rick Guy of Endeavor Foundation, Brisbane, Australia, will represent NAID-ANZ; Graeme Watson of Trust Marley Ltd., Sussex, England, will represent NAID-Europe; and Kevin Perry of Shred Guard, St. John, New Brunswick, will represent NAID-Canada.

All directors serve a two-year term.

“Over the years, NAID has benefited from strong leaders representing a healthy cross-section of perspectives,” says NAID CEO Bob Johnson. “NAID members should be happy to know their interests are under the stewardship of professionals with the same concerns and challenges that they face every day.”
