Sweden-based energy supplier Vattenfall has entered into a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Germany-based Wieland Group, a leading supplier of semifinished products made of copper and copper alloys.

Through the PPA, the companies expect to provide investment security, a price guarantee and risk diversification for both parties. Additionally, the agreement provides for the supply of fossil-free, renewable energy from a Vattenfall solar park in Brandenburg, Germany, to Wieland. When it is complete in 2025, the solar park is expected to generate about 46-gigawatt hours of electricity per year for metalworking processes.

Over the 10-year agreement period, Vattenfall will supply Wieland with about 460 gigawatt hours of electricity, saving about 29,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

“The demand for fossil-free energy partnerships for our solar and wind power plants has been increasing noticeably,” says Christine zu Putlitz, head of marketing for renewable energy at Vattenvall. “Our energy partnership with Wieland is an example of how entire value chains can be made fossil-free in practice. Because it decarbonized precisely those metalworking processes that ultimately form the basis for products and services central to the energy transition—including our own.”

“Based on our sustainability strategy, we are consistently driving forward the reduction of emissions," Wieland Group CEO Erwin Mayr adds. "In addition to our own renewable energy production through photovoltaic systems, Wieland has set itself the ambitious goal of using 100 percent renewable energy for its electrified production facilities in the future. Therefore, the energy partnership with Vattenvall represents another important milestone for climate protection and the achievement of our sustainability goals.”
