Hartsville, South Carolina-based packaging company Sonoco Products Co. has received International Sustainability and Carbon Certification System (ISCC) Plus certification for its EnviroFlex Recycled Content packaging portfolio.
The certification brings third-party validation of resin-sourcing practices at Sonoco’s Morristown, Tennessee, facility, and the company adds that it also shows it continues to build credibility as a market leader in high-performing laminations containing recycled materials.
“As a Sustainable Forestry Initiative chain-of-custody certified facility, the Morristown operations bring extensive knowledge for validating source materials,” says Laura Buen Abad, vice president of technology and marketing at Sonoco. “Achieving ISCC Plus certification within our EnviroFlex Recycled Content Portfolio showcases our commitment to bringing circularity to flexible packaging.”
Sonoco’s EnviroFlex Recycled Content portfolio is a collection of custom oxygen, moisture and grease-barrier films made with postconsumer polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The company says the films can be added to recyclable or nonrecyclable structures and are designed as a drop-in replacement to films made with virgin material.
“This line is intended to bring circular practices to flexible packaging while maintaining the highest level of performance and machinability,” Sonoco says.
ISCC Plus certification is a voluntary commitment to increase transparency and ensure traceability of recycled material throughout the entire supply chain via a mass balance approach. With this certification, Sonoco says it can provide customers with verifiable materials that contribute to the circular economy, help them meet sustainability commitments and, more broadly, support the expansion of recycling infrastructure.
“EnviroFlex Recycled Content can make a real difference in reducing virgin plastic uses and promoting circularity,” Sonoco says. “With the ISCC Plus designation, this product line will continue expanding Sonoco’s reach and provide access to innovative packaging solutions that are linked to circular materials.”
