York County, Virginia, has issued a Notice of Intent to Award for curbside refuse and recycling services to Republic Services of Yorktown.
Phoenix-based Republic Services has provided curbside refuse collection in York County for nearly 30 years.
According to the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily, regional waste authority Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority Board of Directors voted to terminate York County’s curbside recycling contract with Chesapeake, Virginia-based Tidewater Fibre Corp. in September.
Following a procurement process and review of proposals, Republic Services was selected to continue as the county’s refuse collection provider and to begin curbside recycling services in January 2026. The York County Board of Supervisors is expected to formally approve the contract at the Nov. 18th meeting.
Prior to the start of Republic’s contract, recycling collection will be paused from Nov. 1-Dec. 31 and will commence on a biweekly basis in January 2026.
“This is a significant step forward in restoring a service that our residents value deeply,” York County Administrator Mark Bellamy says. “We appreciate the community’s patience as we worked to identify a long-term, sustainable solution for recycling in York County.”
