Xstrata Says It Has No Plans to Close UK lead plant

Despite close of one plant, company reaffirms decision to keep other operations open.

Xstrata Zinc, a unit of Xstrata Plc, said that the recent closure of its lead recycling plant in the UK, did not herald the closure of the rest of the business.

Xstrata closed its 36,000 metric ton a year recycling plant in mid-December with a loss of about 75 jobs.

The unit, operated by wholly owned Xstrata subsidiary Britannia Refined Metals Ltd., was part of the assets acquired by Xstrata from Australia's MIM Holdings last year.

"We have no foreseeable plans to shut the remaining plant," Alan Breen, BRM general manager, told Reuters.

BRM had previously closed another of its 36,000 metric ton lead refining lines at its UK facility last March, and capacity currently stands between 160,000 to 170,000 metric tons of refined lead per year.

In 2002 Britannia produced about 250,000 metric tons of refined lead and alloys, including 36,000 metric tons of recycled metal, as well as some 15 million ounces of silver. Reuters
