The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources announced the recipients of its 2004 Recycling Assistance Grants. A total 31 applicants was approved for amounts totaling more than $1.6 million. The grants were awarded to state solid waste authorities, county commissions, municipalities, private industries and nonprofit organizations. Funding for the recycling assistance program is generated through a $1 assessment fee per ton of solid waste disposed of at in-state landfills and is provided by Senate Bill 18 legislation.
Recipients of the grants are the following:
The Barbour County Solid Waste Authority, to assist with costs of building addition, new truck and baler, received a grant of up to $57,605.
The Braxton County Solid Waste Authority / Town of Sutton, to assist with personnel costs, educational travel, supplies, vehicle expenses, rent, utilities and advertising for program continuation needs, received a grant of up to $54,400.
The Calhoun County Solid Waste Authority, to assist with personnel costs, roof repairs, cement, overhead door opener, and shipping costs for recyclables to improve current recycling facility, received a grant of up to $62,217.
The Clay County Solid Waste Authority, to assist with personnel costs, mileage, savings bonds, photo paper, digital camera, shipping/handling and educational travel to expand current educational program in county, received a grant of up to $15,722.20.
In Fayette County, Dave's Sanitation Service, Inc. received a grant of up to $40,000 to purchase a truck and lift system in order to continue the current operation.
The city of Lewisburg received a grant of up to $36,000 to purchase a recycling truck, print and video development, flyer/brochures, promotional items, recycling consultation, and follow-up consultation to increase public awareness program and replace current collection truck.
The city of Clarksburg received a grant of up to $100,000 to purchase a new tub grinder that will replace a 1995 model.
The Jackson County Solid Waste Authority was awarded a grant of up to $100,000 to assist in costs with building and equipment insurance, gas, equipment maintenance contracts, supplies, utilities, contracted labor, blacktop, fending, loading dock/storage area, septic system, restroom, wall reinforcement, skid steer, and collection trailers.
The Jefferson County Solid Waste Authority was awarded a grant of up to $19,411 to construct a building, cement pad, electric service, baler, baler handling equipment, and educational/promotion items.
The Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority / City of South Charleston / Town of Marmet / Town of Glasgow / Town of Cedar Grove will receive a grant of up to $200,000 to assist with the purchase of a baler to continue existing recycling program.
Tarbro Filter Recycling will receive a grant of up to $36,500 to purchase a 2004 cargo van and water evacuator to assist in expanding service area in high volume industrial areas.
In Logan County, Smith's Recycling will receive a grant of up to $42,640 to purchase Dens-A-Can with conveyer to process aluminum and metal cans; cement and gravel needed to comply with DEP regulations for free drop-off of white goods.
Vance Recycling will receive a grant of up to $46,750 to purchase above ground hopper/conveyer, baler, and assist with freight costs to add equipment to current operation.
In Marion County, Mannington Refuse LLC will receive a grant of up to $41,700 to purchase front end loader, self-dumping trailer, and building to increase curbside and drop-off pickups.
The Marion County Solid Waste Authority will receive a grant of $32,013 to assist with personnel costs, Ice's Run Auto Wrecking, rehandling charges, educational travel, Earth Day event, Christmas card event, E-cycling drive, and advertising for special event.
The North Central West Virginia Recycling Cooperative, Inc. will receive a grant of up to $30,425 to assist with personnel costs, supplies/postage, educational promotion, educational travel, tax preparation, rent, insurance and phone costs for program continuation needs.
The Pleasants County Solid Waste Authority will receive a grant of up to $80,900 to assist with personnel costs, baler, paving, educational publications, building modifications, and bins to continue recycling services.
Snwshoe Mountain, Inc. will receive a grant of up to $27,987 to purchase recycling compartment trailers to expand and increase efficiency of the current recycling program.
The city of Kingwood will receive a grant of up to $29,472 to purchase a baler and skid steer to expand the current recycling program.
Diamond Electric Mfg. Company will receive a grant of up to $12,300 to purchase a baler, baling wire, and recycling containers to expand existing recycling program.
West Virginia Cashin Recyclables received a grant of up to $21,942 to purchase two recycling containers, eight 1.5yd hoppers, two 3-yd hoppers, and concrete to complete appliance yard and public drop-off center.
Beckley Waste Paper received a grant of $39,500 to assist with purchase of a baler to be used in the recycling program.
Midway Scrap & Recycling, Inc. received a grant of $26,800 to purchase a baler and platform scales to improve baling and handling capability.
The Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority / City of Beckley / Raleigh County Commission will receive a grant of $200,000 to assist with costs associated in the continued construction of the new regional recycling facility.
The Randolph County Solid Waste Authority will receive a grant of $65,500 to aid with personnel costs, purchase recycling trailer, skid steer and educational brochures to expand current Saturday drop-off program and public awareness program.
The Tucker County Commission received a grant of $16,180 to purchase five roll-offs and expenses associated with Sunrise Sanitation (transportation) to introduce a county-wide recycling program.
United Disposal Service received a grant of $50,000 to purchase ten roll-offs and a Bobcat in order to expand program and increase volume.
The Wayne County Solid Waste Authority received a grant of $9,968 to assist with recycling coordinator and laborer salaries.
Greenpak, Inc. received a grant of $50,000 to purchase a grinder to mulch damaged and unuseful pallets.
Northwestern Landfill, Inc. received a grant of close to $42,000 to assist with costs to replace current tow motor and purchase a new pallet jack.
And the city of Parkersburg received a grant of $90,175 to purchase baler/conveyer/box dumper, assist with utilities, promotional items, advertising, office and safety supplies to expand municipal recycling program.
