The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s Rehabilitation Environment Action Plan – The Next Generation, has awarded more than $1 million to cities, waste authorities and private companies to boost recycling levels in the state.
A total of 27 cities and county solid waste authorities, as well as private businesses, received assistance through the state program.
"In the 13 years that the recycling grants have been presented, we've awarded 245 grants, totaling more than $20 million," said Jim Hill, manager of REAP's Statewide Recycling Program.
The grants are available to any county, municipality, public or private entity in West Virginia interested in planning and implementing recycling programs, related public educational programs or recycling marketing efforts.
"Over the years, there has been a 30 percent increase in the number of recycling grant applicants," Hill said. "The goal of the program is to see the number double, an increase of 100 percent. Not enough people know about the program and what we have to offer; and we want to get the
word out.
