The West Virginia Economic Development Grant Committee voted to fund 29 more projects worth $118 million, including a proposed electronics recycling plant in Davisville.
The committee authorized a $4.3 million grant for the electronics recycling project, to be located in Wood County. Applied for by the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council and the Polymer Alliance Zone, the original grant request was for $9.86 million.
Polymer Alliance Zone vice president Hal Foss said while the group would have liked the full amount, he is not going to complain about a $4.3 million grant.
If everything goes as planned, the Davisville facility would house two companies, Foss said.
"The first company will actually disassemble computers and break them down," he said.
The computers will be divided into their component parts of metal, plastic and some glass. Some parts will be taken out and resold.
"The historic problem has been that when you do this, the plastic that comes out has very little value," Foss said.
To deal with this, Foss said, the groups are in negotiation with MBA Polymers, a company that developed a process to sort the mixed plastics leftover from the computers into their component parts.
"Now that we have the grant, that should certainly improve our chances of being able to attract MBA," Foss said.Latest from Recycling Today
