Oregon DEQ Fines Recycler

Wurdinger Recycling fails to handle scrap tires properly.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued penalties totaling $11,116 to Wurdinger Recycling, Inc. which owns an automotive dismantling and salvage facility in Aurora, Ore., for improper transportation and storage of waste tires.

Oregon law requires that businesses storing large amounts of tires obtain a permit and follow requirements designed to minimize these risks.

Wurdinger was hired to remove around 5,000 waste tires from the former A-Z Auto Wreckers site located in Central Pointe, Ore. However, Wurdinger did not obtain a Waste Tire Carrier permit prior to transporting the waste tires.  The company was fined $5,400 for this violation.

In addition, Wurdinger failed to obtain a waste tire storage permit which is required in Oregon for any auto wrecking facility that is storing over 1,500 waste tires.  During an inspection of the Aurora facility this past spring, DEQ staff noted that around 2, 838 tires were stored at the Aurora facility. The company was fined $5,716 for this violation.
Wurdinger applied for a waste tire carrier permit in April 2009.  The permit was granted in June 2009.  To date, the company has not applied for a waste tire storage permit.

The company appealed the penalties on Dec. 2.
