Steve Spence, a partner with The Sutta Co., an Oakland, Calif.-based recycling company with locations throughout the Western half of the United States, has been elected to the Washington State Recycling Association (WSRA) Hall of Fame.
Spence started as a procurement forester for Arkansas Kraft. He later managed the secondary fiber system at the mill and was a paper machine foreman.
In 1986 Spence moved to the Northwest when he was hired by Rabanco Recycling as a sales manager. In the early 1990s, he established multiple Pacific Northwest curbside and composting programs. Further, as Rabanco’s vice president of recycling and transfer, Spence designed curbside processing equipment and helped develop a number of Rabanco facilities in the Seattle area.
In 1999, Spence partnered with Steve Sutta as owner and operator of a dozen plants processing paper, plastic, organics and metal. In 2009, the two formed Green Planet 21, a sustainability company that is charged with assisting companies reach zero landfill and sustainability goals.
