WRAP Seeks Partners for Mixed Plastics Recyling

WRAP conducting trial to encourage commercial mixed plastics recycling.

Waste and Resources Action Program (WRAP), an English organization helping individuals and businesses reduce waste, is seeking partners for trials into commercial scale mixed plastics recycling.

After recent studies indicated the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of recycling mixed plastics packaging, WRAP is attempting to find out whether mixed plastics recycling is commercially sustainable in the United Kingdom.

According to WRAP, finding a commercially viable solution is vital to process the anticipated increase in mixed plastics waste collected from households and to support the development of sustainable end markets.

Organizations participating in the three-part trial will have the option to partake in individual parts, or all three. The project is slated to begin in September and will include:

·         A materials recovery facility (MRF) processing trial looking at effective mixed plastic sorting processes

·         A commercial scale recycling trial and management of what remains and cannot be recycled

·         Carrying out a detailed economic assessment to evaluate the commercial sustainability of mixed plastics recycling

WRAP will then use the results of the trial to try to encourage investment in MRF operations and mixed plastics recycling in the U.K.

”This is the next major step on the path to widespread mixed plastics recycling in the U.K.,” says Paul Davidson, plastics sector manager. “The findings will provide valuable information to help MRF operators and reprocessors develop practical solutions to recycling this material in the U.K.

Businesses or organizations interested in participating in the trial can obtain an application form at
