The World Steel Association (Worldsteel), Brussels, has recognized nin companies as Steel Sustainability Champions for their work in 2019.
This is the third year the association has honored steel companies that it says are most clearly demonstrating their commitments to sustainable development. ArcelorMittal, Tata Steel Europe, Tata Steel Ltd. and Tenaris have been recognized by the association annually since the award was introduced.
Now in its third year, the Steel Sustainability Champions Programme commends those steel companies that are most clearly demonstrating their commitment to sustainable development.
The 2019 Steel Sustainability Champions are:
- ArcelorMittal;
- BlueScope Steel Ltd.;
- China Steel Corp. (CSC);
- JSW Steel Ltd.;
- Nippon Steel Corp.;
- Tata Steel Europe;
- Tata Steel Ltd.;
- Tenaris; and
- Ternium.
It is the first year Worldsteel has recognized BlueScope Steel, CSC and Nippon. JSW Steel and Ternium have been recognized by the association for the second consecutive year, while ArcelorMittal, Tata Steel Europe, Tata Steel Ltd. and Tenaris have been recognized for the third consecutive year.
To receive this recognition, steel companies must:
- sign the Worldsteel Sustainable Development Charter;
- provide data for six of the Worldsteel Sustainability Indicators (material efficiency, environmental management systems, lost time injury frequency rate, employee training, investment in new processes and products and economic value distributed) and life cycle inventory (LCI) data to Worldsteel’s data collection program that covers more than 50 percent of the company’s crude steel production data and is less than five years old;
- publish a sustainability-related report; and
- be shortlisted in one of five Worldsteel Steelie Awards (Innovation of the Year, Excellence in Sustainability, Excellence in Life Cycle Assessment, Excellence in Education and Training and Excellence in Communications Programs) or be recognized in the Safety and Health Recognition Program.
