Workshop Explains Shredder Operation

Scrap company hopes to bring shredder to its facility in Colton, Calif.

Pacific Rail Industries recently held a workshop with residents of a California city as it attempts to bring a shredder to their facility.

The Colton, Calif., Planning Commission held its second workshop to show the operation of an auto shredder that Pacific Rail Industries is looking to locate in the city.

The company, which shared the workshop with a city environmental consultant, provided a step-by-step explanation of the shredding operation.

The company is hoping to bring the shredder, which originally was operating in Carson, Calif., to its yard. The shredder, earlier owned by Clean Steel, was forced to shut down Dec. 31 due to a change in the zoning in that city.

The workshop, held March 23rd, was used to demonstrate the impact the shredder would have on the city.

According to Andres Soto, planning manager for the Community Development Department, the public comment period, which was slated to end by April 8, has been extended by two weeks. Colton Iron & Metal, a competitor of Pacific Rail, had requested the extension so it could have ample time to comment on the project.

Soto estimates that the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the project sometime in May. At that time the Planning Commission will make a recommendation on whether or not the city should approve the installation of the shredder.

A full environmental review of the project, though, says the only environmental effect will be noise that exceeds the city's ordinance at the northern property line, which abuts the Union Pacific rail yard.
