WMI Holds Grand Opening at Glass Recycling Plant

Waste Management Inc. announced the grand opening of a glass recycling facility in Union City, Calif., by its glass processing business CRA-Recycle America.

The new facility will provide a steady supply of quality, recycled glass for Gallo Glass Co., a subsidiary of E & J Gallo Winery.

The facility features a fully automated glass sorting line that removes foreign material, including ceramic and metal, from three-mix glass, a combination of clear, brown and green recycled glass.

Since it began operations in this past June, the facility has provided 28,000 tons of superior quality recycled glass to Gallo Glass, which has used the material to produce new bottles. The facility has the capacity to process 160,000 tons of three-mix glass annually, or approximately 25 tons of glass per hour.

The glass produced from the Union City facility will allow Gallo to produce exceptional quality glass bottles more efficiently, while increasing the use of recycled three-color mixed glass.

CRA is the second largest glass processor in the United States and one of the largest users of high-tech automated technology in processing glass. CRA's 10 U.S. facilities process more than 800,000 tons of container glass annually. CRA services all major glass container manufacturers.
