Videotapes showed Waste Management employees failing to correctly handle recyclables that were designed to be recycled in Highland Park, Ill. Due to the videotape the city has given WMI two weeks to come up with a plan to prevent recyclables from being discarded.
The Highland City Council brought up the issue at its most recently held Council meeting, Nov. 26th. At that time WMI said that it would have a response by the next City Council hearing, Dec. 10. At that time the company is expected to explain how it will rectify the problem.
The city conducted its own investigation after seeing the videotape. The city issued a $500-per-day fine for the 40-day period when the videotaping was done.
If Waste Management does not come up with a plan in two weeks to solve the problem, it could face additional daily fines, city officials said.
