Packaging manufacturer Winpak Ltd., Winnipeg, Manitoba, recently announced that the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) has approved its near-term science-based emissions reduction targets. The company says its targets, coupled with its aim to provide “the best packaging solutions for people and planet,” will be its primary means for measuring its sustainability progress.

Winpak says it has committed to reducing its absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 63 percent by 2030 from a 2022 base year and also has committed to reducing its Scope 3 GHG emissions 51.6 percent per metric ton of sold product within the same timeframe.

The company says its emission reduction goals are aligned with a 1.5 degrees Celsius temperature change trajectory.

“Winpak began its sustainability journey in earnest in 2018,” Winpak President and CEO Olivier Muggli says. “We have made strong progress in reducing energy and emissions intensity over the past seven years. Many Winpak customers have sustainability goals and SBTi commitments, and we are even more well positioned now to help them reduce their climate impact. I am proud of this commitment by the Winpak organization and look forward to accomplishing these goals.”

Winpak, closely aligned with European packaging material developer Wipak, is a member of the American Institute for Packaging and the Environment (Ameripen), the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA), PAC Global, the Polypropylene Recycling Coalition and the Sustainable Packaging Coalition. The company manufactures and distributes packaging materials and machines primarily used for perishable foods, beverages, pharmaceuticals, medical and personal care products.
