In an effort to eliminate significant losses by the transfer station for the city of Mansfield Mass., the town’s solid waste regulations that would go into effect Aug. 1 could force commercial contractors to take their waste elsewhere.
Under the proposed change Willimantic Waste Paper Co., which is in the process of opening a new facility, would become Mansfield’s designated facility for commercial bulky waste.
According to Public Works Director Lon R. Hultgren, the only other option would be to double the $20 per cubic yard fee.
Currently the town pays approximately $125 to haul a roll-off dumpster of bulky waste to the Manchester landfill, said recycling coordinator Virginia Walton. Effective July 1, the tipping fee in Manchester increased from $58 a ton to $63 a ton.
The proposed regulation change does not affect residents. Residents hauling bulky waste in their own vehicles would still be allowed to use the transfer station.
The town council, in its role as the Mansfield Resource Recover Authority, scheduled a July 28 public hearing for residents to comment on the proposed change. Willimantic (Connecticut) Chronicle
