Germany-based red metals producer Wieland Group has filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) with the North Carolina Department of Commerce indicating it will lay off 120 people at its plant in Pine Hall, in the north central portion of that state.
The notice, filed Aug. 7, classifies the 120 layoffs as permanent and says they will take effect Oct. 2.
On its website, Wieland says the Pine Hall facility accepts copper-bearing scrap and copper cathodes as part of a production process that includes two casting processes to manufacture copper tubing.
The WARN filing lists 87 of the affected positions as being hourly production jobs, with another 10 listed as maintenance positions and nine classified as supervisory positions.
Wieland Group says it has nearly 9,000 employees worldwide. The company expanded its footprint in North America with the 2019 acquisition of the former Global Brass and Copper Holdings Inc., which operated the former Olin Brass, Chase Brass and A.J. Oster companies in the United States.
