Approximately 400 workers are reportedly being called brought back from lay off at a Whirlpool Corp. plant in Fort Smith, Ark., ideally providing a spark to manufacturing activity and scrap generation in the region.
According to a report on the Web site of Fort Smith TV station KHBS, a Whirlpool spokesperson indicated that an increase in production demand is the reason behind the company calling back the 400 workers.
In 2008, according to the report, Whirlpool laid off nearly 700 workers, at the time citing the state of the national economy. The Fort Smith plant manufactures side-by-side refrigerators and icemakers.
The TV station’s report also indicated that Whirlpool is planning to add a production shift by the end of January which could require making new hires.
