After a rancorous 14 month, Weyerhaeuser’s attempt to acquire its smaller rival, Willamette, was completed as the two finished the deal this week.
On Feb. 11, shareholders controlling 97 percent of Willamette’s shares agreed to the final bid by Weyerhaeuser.
With the deal now completed, industry watchers are wondering if the combined company will be shutting down any production facilities. As the North American forest products industry continues to struggle with an oversupply of finished product, some in the industry expect to see further shutdowns as an attempt to bring supply and demand back into balance.
