West Virginia agency approves recycling grants to 10 counties

The West Virginia DEP has approved $121,000 in grants to assist electronics recycling in the state.

The Covered Electronic Devices (CED) Recycling Grant Program of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) has approved 10 applicants for grant amounts totaling $121,151.

Under the WVDEP’s Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan (REAP), the CED Program requires manufacturers to register their brands with the state. The fees collected from this program allow counties and municipalities to apply for CED grants to conduct electronic collection events and support ongoing collection programs.

The goals of the program are to establish a registration process for manufacturers of covered electronic devices, to determine if manufacturers have adopted or implemented a free take-back/recycling program for their products, and to award recycling grants to counties and municipalities for programs that divert electronic scrap from the waste stream.

Grants were awarded to the following government agencies:

  • Jefferson County Solid Waste Authority: $20,000 to fund e-cycling charges and equipment maintenance for an ongoing program;
  • Brooke County Solid Waste Authority: $16,866 to fund personnel, advertising and contracted services for a collection event, plus electricity and a security system for the ongoing program;
  • Preston County Commission: $16,305 to fund e-cycling services, labor wages, flyers and advertising for a county collection event;
