West Virginia DEP Approves Recycling Grants

A total of 24 municipalities and counties will receive funding from the Department of Environmental Protection through its CED Recycling Grant Program.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has announced that 24 applicants have been approved for grants from the DEP’s Covered Electronic Devices (CED) Recycling Grant Program. A total of more than $233,000 will be distributed to the recipients. Money will be used to increase the collection of electronic scrap by the applicant communities.

The CED program, established in 2008 under the DEP’s Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan, requires that electronics manufacturers register their brands with the state. The program allows counties and municipalities to apply for CED grants to conduct electronic collection events as well as supports ongoing collection programs.

The goals of the program are to establish a registration process for manufacturers of covered electronic devices, to determine if manufacturers have adopted or implemented a free take-back/recycling program for their products and award recycling grants to counties and municipalities for recycling or other programs that divert covered electronic devices from the waste stream.
