West Sacramento Shredder Site Takes Shape

Block grant will help West Coast Recycling Group in its effort to build a shredder at the Port of West Sacramento.

The Planning Commission of the City of West Sacramento, Calif., has announced receiving a $2.5 million federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to provide public infrastructure in support of a metals shredding facility proposed for the Port of West Sacramento.

In addition to announcing the block grant, a news released posted to the Planning Commission website on June 22, 2011, states that West Coast Recycling LLC presented its plans for the project to the West Sacramento Planning Commission on June 16.

"We are moving forward with our investment in the West Sacramento community to construct our new state-of-the-art metal recycling facility at the Port of West Sacramento," says David Gigerich, president and CEO of West Coast Recycling Group LLC, which is based in West Sacramento.

A spokesperson for West Coast Recycling says the facility would include the installation of a 6,000 horsepower auto shredder, a downstream sorting system that include magnets and eddy current separators, office and warehouse buildings, truck scales, a stormwater detention pond and an electrical substation and associated power poles.

The company first approached the city’s planning commission in the summer of 2010 about the project. After the initial hearing, city staff prepared a mitigated negative declaration/finding of no significant impact (MND/FONSI) for the project.

The spokesperson for West Coast Recycling says most of the material shredded will be loaded onto bulk carriers for export. Depending on when the company receives its conditional use permit, the shredder may be operational by the fall of 2012, according to the spokesperson.
