Wendt Corp. of Buffalo, New York, has commissioned a Wendt Model 106 Heavy shredding plant with an emission control system at PNW Metal Recycling in Longview, Washington, which it says sets “a new benchmark for safety, sustainability and operational efficiency.”
PNW Metal Recycling, a multifamily, multigenerational business that handles a range of ferrous and nonferrous metals across seven facilities in Washington and Oregon, previously operated a smaller shredder that limited production and was not ideally located for its bulk loading operations. Seeking greater efficiency, increased capacity and compliance with strict regional emissions requirements, PNW turned to Wendt for a solution that met its operational, environmental and regulatory needs.

According to Wendt, the result is a fully integrated shredding system designed for safety, reliability and sustainability. Featuring a fully enclosed Wendt Model 106 Heavy shredder powered by a 6,000-horsepower motor with variable frequency drive (VFD) that is paired with a complete emissions control system, this system captures, filters and measures one hundred percent of what is emitted by the shredder.
“Environmental stewardship and regulations within our region led us to acquire specific control equipment for the larger shredder, which Wendt was the only shredder manufacturer that offered a full service of design and equipment for sale,” PNW Vice President Sean Daoud says. “Wendt aided in the process of obtaining all state permits necessary before purchasing the equipment as well as providing engineered drawings to our contractor for construction.”
The shredding system incorporates a low-copper shred downstream and a poker picker to remove unshreddables. Also included is Wendt’s new shredder operating software, Wendtos, that provides real-time insights into production, performance and maintenance data, according to the manufacturer.
The Wendt-PNW collaboration spanned several years of planning, design and engineering.
“We have had a great experience with Wendt’s customer service and support, along with the deep knowledge of our business and industry,” Daoud says. “This investment will significantly increase our production capacity, deliver a low-copper shred and improve operational efficiency, opening new opportunities to diversify our markets.”
“The plant represents the next generation of shredding technology, not only delivering advanced metal recovery and improved liberation but also setting a new standard in environmental responsibility in the industry,” adds Ethan Willard, Wendt global director of business development. “It’s exciting to see PNW positioned as a leader in both performance and sustainability.”
