The union at bankrupt Weirton Steel Corp. reached a tentative labor agreement with prospective Weirton buyer International Steel Group.
Independent Steelworkers union president Mark Glyptis has previously indicated about 2,000 of the current 3,000 jobs are likely to remain under ISG.
ISG has offered to buy Weirton for $255 million in a deal that includes cash and the assumption of various liabilities. A hearing to set a timeline for the sale and the solicitation of counteroffers will be held March 8 in Wheeling.
Company officials hope to consummate the deal before the end of April.
The union's current contract with Weirton Steel, which had been set to expire March 31, has been extended through the transition period.
