Nucor-Vulcraft, which held its annual Scrap Day in Norfolk, NE, on May 6th, had support from WasteCap Nebraska, a non-profit organization that provides free, confidential, non-regulatory waste reduction serves to businesses in the state.
WasteCap Nebraska, with support from the Nebraska Environmental Trust, helped the Scrap Day expand to include computers, monitors, television sets and other types of electronics.
During the one-day event a total of 489 vehicles brought in recyclables, with more than half bringing electronic scrap products.
“It was an amazing day” said Carrie Hakenkamp, executive Director of WasteCap Nebraska. “”We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of electronics in the community.” All together, WasteCap helped collect over 31,000 pounds of computers and other electronics.
The collected electronics was processed by CP Recovery, an Omaha, Nebraska-based electronics company. The cost to properly manage and recycle equipment will run roughly $9,000.
WasteCap Nebraska hosts several similar computer collection and e-waste awareness events throughout the year. Most of these projects have been funded through a grant provided by the Nebraska Environmental Trust.
The next WasteCap computer collection for businesses will take place June 21st at Lincoln's State Fair Park.
