Waste Management Opens MRF in Colorado

Sterling, Colo., MRF will help to feed the company’s Denver facility.

Waste Management of Sterling (Colorado) recently held a grand opening for its newest material recovery facility (MRF) in Sterling, Colo. The facility will allow Waste Management of Sterling to offer curbside single-stream, commercial single-stream and drop-off recycling in northeast Colorado.

The new facility was assisted by the state of Colorado through its Department of Public Health and Environment Resources Economic Opportunity Fund Grant Program, which awarded the company about $228,000 to build the facility.

The MRF, located in the northeastern region of Colorado, has been designed to be a feeder facility for Waste Management of Colorado’s Denver facility. Material will be stored, compacted and transported to a hub in Denver where the material will be processed and marketed.

Through the program, Waste Management will partner with communities in the region to establish single-stream curbside recycling service as well as expand recycling service to local businesses.

The company says the new facility will be able to divert more than 3,750 tons of recyclables per year from landfills.
