Houston-based Waste Management Inc. (WM) has reportedly purchased the assets of Benz Sanitation Inc., a waste and recyclables hauling firm based in Tehachapi, California, near Bakersfield.
According to an online report from the Ridgecrest Independent Daily of California, a spokesperson from WM confirmed that the company is buying all assets of Benz Sanitation and that WM expects the deal “will close by August 1, 2016.”
A separate news report earlier in the month indicated that Benz was planning to lay off more than 130 employees in different parts of California, in part because of the loss of a municipal collection contract in the town of Ridgecrest.
The WM spokesperson contacted by the Independent Daily, however, said WM will retain “a majority if not all of the employees” who had been scheduled to be terminated by Benz.
On its website, Benz lists residential waste collection as one of seven services offered by the company, along with construction site rolloff services, mobile document shredding, septic tank pumping, portable toilet rentals and propane-related services.
