Washington Mills has developed a process that will allow the company to collect spent aluminum oxide grit and recycle it back into its manufacturing process.
The company estimates that more than 150,000 tons of fused aluminum oxide grit is consumed annually in the U.S; of that amount only a small portion is recycled. The majority of the generated material is typically landfilled.
To combat the significant amount of aluminum oxide being landfilled, Washington Mill, a large manufacturer of aluminum oxide, has developed a recycling process that allows users of fused aluminum oxide grit to return their spent aluminum oxide grit back to the manufacturer once they're done with it.
Washington Mills has invested in research and development to make its aluminum oxide manufacturing process a completely closed-loop manufacturing system. The company notes that it is the only manufacturer of fused aluminum oxide in North America operating its own furnace plants. Because of this, the company has the advantage of reintroducing the spent aluminum oxide into its furnace operation. The spent aluminum oxide is reused as a key raw material in making new fused aluminum oxide.
The process does not produce any waste, reduces the dependency on new raw materials, and provides an outlet for disposing of spent aluminum oxide.
Washington Mills successfully makes pure fused aluminum oxide from recycled material that has the same chemistry and crystal structure as fused aluminum oxide made from new raw materials.
