Wabash Alloys late last month announced plans to close its secondary aluminum smelter in East Syracuse, N.Y. According to a spokesman for Wabash, the company expects to mothball the facility by the end of next month.
According to published reports the facility has been producing around 12 million pounds of ingot a month, with a large portion of the end product going toward the automotive industry.
The decision to shutter the plant follows the announcement by a host of aluminum smelters to remove capacity from the market.
The decision to shutter the plant follows Wabash’s decision, last year, to close smelting operations in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Alabama.
After the New York smelter closes Wabash will continue to operate eight smelting operations in North America, including two in Canada.Latest from Recycling Today
