The Virginia Recycling Association (VRA) and the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Old Dominion Chapter will host their 2nd joint conference and trade show April 29-May 1 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The theme of the conference is Navigating Changes on the Horizon, which will speak to the challenges the waste and recycling industries face as global recycling markets are in flux, the association says.

Educational topics this year will include new technologies for landfills, recycling facilities and variations for glass recycling. This year, the conference also offers a pre-workshop on disaster recovery, where attendees can produce a disaster recovery plan for their locality. Industry tours are scheduled Virginia Beach’s former landfill, Mount Trashmore, and Southeastern Public Service Authority Landfill, where conference attendees will get a behind-the-scenes look at solid waste processes, including a new state-of-the-art leachate management system, gas-to-energy plant, transfer station and tire processing facility.

“In addition to our technical sessions and tours, the conference committee has planned several events showcasing the Virginia Beach area, including a horseback riding excursion on the beach and an outdoor family-friendly reception at a popular local hangout,” says Craig Coker, conference chair.
