Viridor has acquired Swinnerton Environmental Limited, an independent recycling and waste management operator based in Bury, U.K. According to a statement, the acquisition is in line with Viridor’s strategy of expanding its waste and recycling activities.
Pennon Group is the parent company of Viridor.
Swinnerton Environmental’s primary business is collecting and processing of recovered paper and plastics, and currently processes about 30,000 metric tons of recyclables per year.
Swinnerton will be integrated into Viridor’s existing commercial recycling facilities within the company’s Manchester, U.K. area, and will operate within Viridor’s Northern region.
Mark Burrows Smith, director of Viridor North, says, “In recent months, Viridor has shown its commitment to becoming the leading recycler in the Greater Manchester region. The acquisition of Swinnerton Environmental Ltd., alongside the acquisition of Adapt Recycling in December, will build upon our existing operations in the region, expanding our business in the key recycling areas.”
“The ever-increasing levels of recycling and landfill diversion being demanded within the UK’s waste strategies mean that investment in key recycling operations is crucial. I look forward to welcoming our new colleagues and working together to deliver high quality recycling services to customers across the region,” continues Smith.
Gordon Swinnerton, managing director of Swinnerton, says, “I am delighted that Viridor has been able to secure the acquisition of Swinnerton’s. This is good news for employees, customers, suppliers and all other stakeholders in the business, and will allow the business to develop. I look forward to working with my new colleagues.”
