According to the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), the total amount of solid waste received at Virginia facilities increased by about 1.9 million tons in 2004, according to a report in the Daily Press (Hampton Roads, Va.).
The DEQ reports that the amount of material from outside the state increased by about 1.2 million tons from 2003 to 2004, an increase of about 18 percent.
According to the Daily Press, most of the increase came from 920,000 tons of additional construction and demolition debris from outside Virginia that was received at a C&D landfill in Goochland County, Va.
The amount of material from within Virginia increased as well, from 18.6 million to 19.3 million tons, according to the report.
