Enviva Materials LLC, based in Richmond, Va., has acquired Cardinal Tire’s processing facility in Youngstown, Ohio. The acquisition will allow Enviva to grow its tire recycling business in Ohio and western Pennsylvania.
"Enviva Materials will become a leading supplier of high-quality processed crumb rubber products and rubber mulch in Ohio and neighboring states. In addition, Enviva Materials-Youngstown will be the first facility of its type in Ohio to transform scrap tires into feedstock material for the production of synthesis gas, a renewable fuel used to produce thermal and electrical energy," said Matt Holland, VP of operations for Enviva.
Enviva expects to invest in the Youngstown operations to boost the facility’s manufacturing capacity.
John Keppler, CEO of Enviva, said, "This opens a real opportunity to help the greater Ohio region manage a key recycling challenge by diverting scrap tires to beneficial use. This facility and its ability to aggregate and process materials typically considered waste into environmentally sensitive fuels fill an important niche in our strategy of creating renewable energy alternatives for major industry customers."
To help celebrate the acquisition, Enviva Materials will be sponsoring a "tire amnesty day" at which the $1.50 per tire processing feed will be waived for people who bring in a set of up to four tires.
