Virginia City Reconsiders Curbside Recycling

Suffolk, Va., City Council asks for proposals from private companies.

The Suffolk, Va., City Council has voted to ask for plans from companies that are interested in providing curbside recycling to residents in the community. The city cut curbside recycling in 2007 to save money, according to a report in the Daily Press (Newport News, Va.).

The city’s former curbside recycling program served nearly 40 percent of the city’s homes, though only 24 percent of the 12,500 homes with the service participated, according to the report.

Eliminating the program saved the city $225,000.

Some residents protested the elimination of curbside recycling before the city council. Declared mayoral candidate, and former mayor Andy Damiani began an online petition to bring curbside recycling back to Suffolk, according to the Daily Press.
