The city of Roanoke, Va., announced that, beginning July 1, it will not be collected either brown or green glass for recycling.
The city reported that Cycle Systems, the collector and processor of the city’s recyclables, markets for the glass is minimal right now. While the city will continue to collect clear glass, it will not be taking in the other types of glass bottles.
However, the city stated that it will allow residents and businesses to recycle separated colored glass at the community recycling station at no charge.
According to local press reports, Cycle Systems opted to halt the collection of the glass due to the inability to find an economically viable outlet for the material in the region.
