Utah Metal Works, located in Salt Lake City, Utah, has received permission and purchased portions of two streets that the City Council has voted to consider closed and abandoned. Utah Metal Works owns the property on both sides of the two streets.
The City Council had voted in favor of the sale on April 1.
Mark Lewon, VP of Operations for Utah Metal Works, notes that purchasing the closed street will give the company a great deal of flexibility, as well as allow it to modernize its operations. "We have been trying for two years to get the streets sold to us," Lewon said.
Several initial steps the company is expected to make include improving the drainage at the site and repairing the street. Lewon says the company hopes to have the initial work by this coming July.
Also, with the company now having ownership of the street the company can install a concrete pad on its scrap processing yard. Other steps the company expects to make will be building a warehouse to house more material, installing a new truck scale to speed up the process and building offices.
With the streets included, the company will now have close to 10 acres of land in which to perform its processing of metals.
While the company received the okay to purchase the street, the City Council has put in a number of stipulations that the company will need to abide by, although Lewon says the not of the requirements are too onerous.
