The US Shredder and Castings Group is introducing a new “double” grate design for use in larger automobile shredders. The company worked with its customer base to develop the heavy duty grate to meet a common issue.
According to Bill Tigner of US Shredder and Castings Group, customers running larger shredders at lower RPMs were noticing a “bowing” of the standard grates even before the typical wear life of the casting had been achieved. By developing the “double” grate, it allows the grate to be reinforced in areas that not only gives it extended wear life in the shredder, but also prevents the “bowing” that sometimes occurs even with a high quality single grate.
The double grate also has the option to have a staggered hole pattern.
In some rotor grate setups, hammers are not swinging directly in line with grate openings. By staggering the grate openings, users ensure that every hammer is swinging above a grate opening at some point in its travel. This provides greater wear life and improved shred throughput within the shredder.
Ongoing research is underway to develop similar designs for all shredder sizes.
The US Shredder and Castings Group offers scrap shredders, control systems, downstream systems, non ferrous recovery, air systems, scrap shears, balers, and loggers; as well as shredder castings, service and consulting to the worldwide scrap industry.
