Upstate Shredding to Install New Shredder

Upstate Shredding, an Owego, N.Y.-based scrap metal recycling facility, has announced plans to install a new metal shredder and full downstream system at its new Ben Weitsman scrap yard in New Castle, Pa., by the first quarter of 2014, according to Adam Weitsman, president of the company.

“We’ve spent years building our metals recycling network in western and central New York and northern Pennsylvania into a highly efficient system,” says Weitsman. “We have ambitious goals for our New Castle yard, and this shredder is the first step in putting that plan of expansion into motion.”

“It took us years to build up our feeder yard system around our Owego shredder, and this new shredding location will be the launching pad of the next phase of our expansion,” Weitsman adds. “We’ve examined the markets surrounding the New Castle facility, and we plan to make several new acquisitions of scrap yards in the region to develop the network of yards to feed the New Castle shredder.”

The shredder and downstream system will be built by Wendt Corp., Buffalo, N.Y. According to Wendt, the shredding system to be installed includes several technological advances, including separation technologies to recover wire, plastics, nonferrous metals and other materials such as fines from the shredded material.

Weitsman acquired the New Castle scrap yard, formerly known as Ferromet, at a bankruptcy auction in December 2012. Weitsman says the company plans to invest several million dollars at the site, including demolition of old buildings and erection of new ones, full paving of the facility and brand new equipment.

When operational, the shredder will be the second for the company. The company operates an auto shredder at its main location in Owego, N.Y.
