Owego, N.Y.-based Upstate Shredding, has announced that it has donated more than $10,000 to the Village of Owego Fire Department to purchase six Globe G-Xtreme, firefighting suits to include the name of the department lettered on the jackets.
“This is the single largest donation we have had from one company in more than six years,” says Daniel Gavin, Assistant Fire Chief.
The Village of Owego Fire Department, an all-volunteer organization, is under contract to the towns of Owego and Tioga, and is responsible for covering an area of about 15 square miles, according to an Upstate Shredding news release.
“I wrote a letter to Upstate for a donation because we are in financial crunch,” says Gavin. “Adam (Weitsman, owner of Upstate Shredding) called me and said, ‘What do you need?’ I replied that we are having problems suiting six people with proper, safe, up-to-date gear. So that’s what he decided to buy it for us. The next day I went to the Village Board Meeting and told the trustees about the donation and they were very happy.”
Upstate Shredding is the largest privately owned metal processing and recycling operation on the East Coast. The company has a second location in Owego as well as other New York facilities in Binghamton, Ithaca and Syracuse, N.Y.
