United Recycling Endorses CERES Principles

Chicago area electronics recycler United Recycling joins a sustainability pact.

United Recycling Industries (URI), West Chicago, Ill., is now a recognized endorser of the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES). The board of directors of CERES approved United Recycling as a new endorser at a mid-April meeting in Washington.

CERES is a coalition of environmental, investor, labor and advocacy groups working together with economic and environmental sustainability as a goal. Companies and organizations joining the CERES network endorse the CERES Principles, a ten-point code of environmental conduct.

United Recycling was welcomed into the network because of its commitment to fully recycle computers and other electronic equipment in an environmentally responsible manner. “United Recycling Industries is a leader in the electronics recycling industry, trying to tackle important problems facing the industry,” says Dan Bakal, CERES outreach director. “We recognize its environmental record and look forward to working with URI for continuous improvement.”

URI leaders hope that the company’s endorsement of the CERES Principles will help communicate its commitment to environmental responsibility to its customers. “Adding the CERES endorsement to our environmental performance portfolio will further communicate URI’s commitment to responsible business practices for a clean environment,” says Robert Glavin, president of URI.

Glavin notes that segments of the U.S. electronics recycling industry have gained negative attention for the practice of exporting electronic scrap to developing nations, where the scrap is often handled without proper attention to environmental and safety considerations. “URI has made significant investments in order to provide its clients with an environmentally sound, domestic recycling solution,” remarks Glavin.
