Umicore S.A., a global materials technology group headquartered in Brussels, has announced that through its association with the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL), Leuven, Belgium, has joined the European division of the Centre for Resource Recovery and Recycling (CR3) .
CR3’s stated goal is to become a key conduit between industry and the university that will be dedicated to the development of sustainable stewardship of natural resources. The initiative develops and transfers technologies to industry with the goal of achieving materials sustainability from initial product design through manufacturing, ultimately to end-of-life disposal, which yields both energy savings and profitability. Umicore states that as a key industrial partner, the company expects to play a role in bringing its industrial experience and research expertise to add value to CR3’s efforts.
Umicore offers a range of recycling services for metals such as precious metals, indium, selenium and tellurium. Umicore adds that is developing an extension of its offering to other recyclables.
Egbert Lox, Umicore’s senior vice president for Research and Development, says, “We are excited to join this initiative. The exchange of knowledge and experiences between universities and industrial players will allow us to leverage our own expertise in this matter, to the benefit of all participants and the world.”
Umicore’s activities are centered on four business areas: catalysis, energy materials, performance materials and recycling.
