UK borough strives for plastics recycling world record

An article by the CIWM Journal, a publication by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), Northampton, U.K., reports that Bournemouth is partnering with the Pledge4Plastics recycling campaign to attempt a world record involving residents and tourists.

“Our seafront team work extremely hard every day to make sure Bournemouth’s beach is beautiful for the daily influx of thousands of visitors, and it’s pleasing that the vast majority of people put their packaging in the bin or take it home to recycle,” Councilor Michael Filer says in the article. “However, we want to make sure even more is recycled, and so we’ve partnered up with #pledge4plastics to promote awareness and drive home the message that more can still be done.” 

Bournemouth will attempt to recover a record amount of recyclable plastic packaging from residents and tourists during August. Recycling contractor Viridor will process the material as part of an event at the Bournemouth Arts Festival in October 2016, the article says. 

“We’re pleased to be supporting quality and convenient recycling in Bournemouth with #pledge4plastics this year,” Dan Cooke, director of executive affairs at Viridor, says in the article. “This welcome partnership should help more people to recycle after they have visited Bournemouth’s beautiful beach this summer.” 

Pledge4Plastic will encourage residents and tourists throughout August to signed up to participate in the world record attempt.
