UK Agency Seeks Comments on ELV

British government agency is looking for feedback to its proposal on addressing end-of-life vehicles.

The United Kingdom’s Department of Trade and Industry has issued a consultation paper seeking views on draft regulations to bring into effect the remaining provisions of the European Union’s End of Life Vehicles Directive.

These provisions relate to "free take-back" of ELVs , beginning Jan. 1, 2007, and to recovery and recycling targets which the UK needs to achieve by 2006 and 2015 (85 percent and 95 percent, respectively of the weight of ELVs).

The UK agency proposes to adopt an "own marque" approach to implementing these provisions. Vehicle manufacturers and professional importers will need to set up networks of authorized treatment facilities to de-pollute and dismantle the brands of vehicles they put on the market, when they reach end-of-life.

Responses to the consultation document are due no later than March 30.

The Directive aims to reduce the amount of waste from vehicles (cars and vans) when they are finally scrapped.
