Elliot Morley, Environment Minister for the United Kingdom, announced that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs would be making available a 20 million pound ($36.5 million) targeted grant to help local authorities recycle in 2004/05.
"This grant fulfils the commitment Defra made in the local government finance statement Nov. 19, to "reduce spending pressures on local government by some 25-35 million pound in the waste area next year," said Morley.
"A share of the targeted grant will be distributed to each local authority with waste responsibilities in England. The grant to each authority will be calculated using a simplified version of the Environmental, Protective and Cultural Services formula tailored to reflect need to spend on waste, depending on factors like population density and size of area."
